No Man an Island

No Man an Island

No man is an island, entire of itself;
Every man is a piece of the Continent,
a part of the main;
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less,
As well as if a promontory were.

Any man's death diminishes me
Because I am involved in mankind.
And therefore never send to know
for whom the bell tolls:
It tolls for thee.

-John Donne

Poppet

Welcome!

Hi Poppet! Thanks for taking the time to check out the site, hopefully there's lots here worth checking out. ;)

To everyone else: Poppet and I met over on HarperCollins' new website, www.authonomy.com, where aspiring writers can post their novels and people can read and vote for their favourites. HarperCollins reviews the best ones, and has already given three or four people publishing contracts as a result. I've submitted "No Man an Island," so head on over to sign up and vote -- let's see what happens!

Author Commentary

Ladies and Gentlemen, my wonderful readers. I have decided to do Author Commentary on NMAI, similar to Director Commentary on DVDs. Whenever you see an Author Commentary post in the comments section, I will be pontificating on the creation of that particular chapter. Sources I used, quotations that inspired me, ideas running through my head. I think I'll be able to do that like this:

John Donne was a famous poet, contemporary to Shakespeare, who actually became the Archbishop of Canterbury and helped develop the King James Bible. I first encountered his work in high school English with Mrs. Powell my OAC (grade 13) year. I hated his early works, which she started the class with -- The Flea and Go and Catch a Falling Star -- because he was a jerk. Then he matured in his later years, becoming very devout and spiritual. Valediction Forbidding Mourning is about his wife, and one of the best poems I've ever read. No Man is an Island inspired the themes of my novel, so it's the poem the novel is named after. Kind of like Hemingway's "For Whom the Bell Tolls." Not that our writing is similar, just our inspiration for titles.

See what I did there? You have to highlight the text to see what I wrote. This way, I don't give anything away too easily and don't distract casual readers. But those who are interested can check it out. Cool, yes?
